Amigo, a instalação do driver nVidia desta maneira requer que você pare o servidor X (interface gráfica) para instalar, por isto da este erro.

-- Para parar a interface gráfica --

Num dos terminais (ctrl+alt+F1), mande:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop

Troque GDM pelo seu gerenciador de login... se usa o KDE, deves usar o kdm como gerenciador de login, se usas XFCE, deves usar o xdm e assim por diante.

Depois de parado o servidor X (você constata isso apertando ctrl+alt+F7 e nenhuma interface gráfica deve aparecer), você pode instalar o driver da nVidia. Lembrando: não escolha baixar a versão pré-compilada durante a instalação, peça para compilar um driver para você.
