Ta dando uma procurada por ai e isso acontece porque não pode iniciar o GTK como outro user:
Não testei mas parece que assim funciona:

me@server$ export DISPLAY=:0.0
me@server$ xhost
#Vai retornar os users
SI:localuser:user1
SI:localuser:kdm
SI:localuser:root

me@server$ xhost + SI:localuser:protect

localuser:protect being added to access control list

me@server$ su - protect
password:

protect@server$ export DISPLAY=:0.0

Depois disso inicie normalmente os navegadores

Deu erro logo no começo:

vinicius $ export DISPLAY=:0.0
vinicius $ xhost

(tentei com o usuario vinicius e com o root:

Experimenta chamar outro programa (um que não dependa do GTK, como o KWrite) como o outro usuário, mas assim:

 $ su --login -c kwrite protect  

Se funcionar, chama o Google Chrome assim:

 $ su --login -c google-chrome protect

Vamos fazer um teste doido? Sai do WindowMaker, desloga do seu usuário, loga no protector, sobre o X com o protector e tenta abrir o Google Chrome assim:

 $ su --login -c google-chrome -- vinicius

Consegui aqui da seguinte forma:

Como o usuário que esta rodando o X:

xhost +



# na sequencia:

su -



# vai pedir a senha do root:

# Rode o export do display

export DISPLAY=:0.0

# Faça o login com o protect:

su protect



Pronto pode rodar o chromium:

Somente mais uma coisa: toda vez que eu desligo o pc eu tenho que digitar esses comandos para funcionar. Como coloco isso na inicialização do slack?
