Isso normalmente acontece quando não tem nada dentro do .xinitrc.

Acabei de instalar o feh para colocar um papel de parede, na wiki pede para fazer como usuário, e aqui só funcionou como root. Parece que iniciar o X como root só me permite fazer o resto das coisas como root...
E também a única coisa que o .xinitrc executa é o i3, porque adicionei o papel de parede segundo a wiki e também não funcionou...

Note que, no .xinit do seu user comum, você está inicializando o TWM, não o i3wm;

Crie uma cópia do seu ~/.xinitrc (cp ~/.xinitrc ~/.xinitrc.bak) e e rode este comando: echo "exec i3" > ~/.xinitrc (note que, nesse caso, apenas um sinal ">" deve ser usado)

Unnslacker, fiz o que vc pediu e o arquivo ~/.xinitrc quando aberto como o meu user mostra apenas o seguinte:
exec i3 


Aí encerrei o X e tentei iniciar novamente como usuário comum, mas deu o mesmo erro.

Tente postar o log que a mensagem de erro diz para verificar-mos; talvez tenha alguma coisa interessante nele

Não, eu estou pedindo o log! aquele diretório que aparece na mensagem de erro que você postou estas duas vezes
