CRON APRESENTA ERRO

Usando o Debian GNU/Linux 6.0, ao digitar o comando service cron status, apresenta a mensagem abaixo:

[....] Checking periodic command scheduler.../etc/init.d/cron: invalid arguments
failed (failed to start).

O conteúdo do arquivo crontab é o seguinte:

Onde XXXXXX é o nome do script a ser executado.

Em outros servers com a mesma distro e configuração mostra a mensagem:
Checking periodic command scheduler...done (running).

Como resolver a mensagem de erro na inicialização do serviço cron?
