O UBUNTU 14.10 NÃO ATUALIZA E NÃO INSTALA PROGRAMAS

Olá pessoal,
Meu notebook tem ubuntu 14.10 e preciso instalar alguns programas para Faculdade (GrADS e WRF), mas não estou conseguindo instalar. Já tentei atualizar com o comando sudo apt-get update, mas não atualiza, aparece alguns erros. Tentei instalar um programa mais simples como o "Adobe", mas também não instala. Fui no gerenciado de arquivos. Tentei direto pelo Download, mas nada dá certo.

E: Falhou o download de alguns ficheiros de índice. Foram ignorados ou os antigos foram usados em seu lugar.


Preciso urgente ajeitar o ubuntu, pois tenho que fazer as pesquisas da Faculdade.

Já tentei esses comandos:
sudo apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Mas não deram certo. Por favor, ajude a resolver esse problema.

Ubuntu 14.10 já teve seu suporte encerrado.
Troque por uma versão mais recente.
16.04 LTS por exemplo.
