pessoal estou tentando instalar o gentoo

Bom, pelo seu post o problema está claro: " Error! /boot/grub/grub.conf does not exist and the correct settings can not be automatically detected."
1º Você instalou o grub?
2º Chegou a verificar as partições no seu fstab?"real_root=/dev/$ROOT"
3º Se instalou, configurou corretamente?
Acredito que, você deveria primeiro adicionar as suas partições corretamente no seu fstab, depois configurar o grub e finalmente tentar o genkernel novamente.

Cara quando vc habilita --bootloader=grub há 2 considerações a serem feitas:
1ª Só funciona com GRUB legacy, ou seja nao funfa com GRUB2
2ª Essa opção somente faz com que o genkernel copie as entradas do grub alterando o nome do kernel e da initramfs, logo se o grub.conf estiver em branco ou as entradas estiverem comentadas, jih eras.

depois que dou os comandos do genkernel
como faco pra add o gentoo e subir ele nu sistema sem erro

GRUB legacy ou GRUB2?

Geralmente, eu faço assim:
genkernel --menuconfig --oldconfig --splash --install all

grep -v rootfs /proc/mounts > /etc/mtab

Caso GRUB Legacy:

# nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf <- edita conforme suas necessiades
# grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda
# grub --no-floppy
------------------
grub> root (hd0,0) <- hd com a parição /boot
grub> setup (hd0) <- MBR
grub> quit

Caso GRUB2:

grub2-install /dev/sda
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg <- gera a configuração automática do grub.cfg, pode ser necessário editar o /etc/default/grub

shakur, não é um erro exatamente, vc não compilou o kernel antes de instalar o grub?

e como lembrou jerodrigo, só funciona a opção bootloader com grub 1.

O genkernel não é mais suportado. Compile e instale o kernel como em:
# emerge grub
# USE="symlink" emerge gentoo-sources
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make localmodconfig
# make && make modules_install
# mount /boot
# cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz (modifique esta linha conforme sua necessidade)
# cat <<EOF > /boot/grub/grub.cfg
set timeout=10

set default=0

menuentry "Funtoo" {
set root=(hd0,1) (modifique conforme necessário)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda2 raid=noautodetect (modifique esta linha conforme sua necessidade)
}
EOF

# grub-install /dev/sda (modifique conforme necessário)
# reboot
