Teclado - Configuração

Instalei o ubuntu-server, depois o gnome-desktop e, após uma semana de uso, o teclado começou a se desconfigurar quando inicializa a interface gráfica. Tento digitar algo em qualquer aplicação, aparece aqueles carácteres estranhos como se eu fosse árabe ou iraquiano para entender isso. Simplesmente acesso System/Preferências/Teclado/LayOut/LayOut Options e, não modifico nada, apenas clico em OK e resolve a situação.
Como se resolveria isso sem precisar em todos os boot's seguir esse procedimento rotineiro?

O som também não funciona. Identifica a presença da placa de som porém não funciona.

coloque as configurações do teclado no arquivo 'xorg.conf'

Temos 2: /etc/X11/xorg.conf e o /home/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Qual deles devemos configurar?

dentro do primeiro vejo configurações keyboard com a Section "InputDevice" onde é generic e o layout é PT e consta o seguinte conteúdo no arquivo todo:

não sei porque tem um xorg.conf no seu home, altera o do /etc/X11

ta estranha essa config do seu teclado, ele é pt mesmo?

o meu é abnt2 e tá assim:
