Instalação ARToolkit 2.72.1 com suporte a VRML no Linux

Observações Iniciais
Devido ao fato de que o OpenVRML-0.16.2, recomendado pelo ARToolkit 2.72.1, para
instalação no Linux (testado com 32 bits) ser relativamente antigo (versão datada de 29/11/2006),
são necessários certos ajustes para poder compilá-lo (esse é o grande obstáculo) com as bibliotecas
e compiladores atuais e fazê-lo funcionar perfeitamente.
Com relação aos resultados obtidos após as diversas tentativas de compilação foi possível
compilar o ARToolkit com suporte a VRML. Um pequeno problema, tanto no Debian como no
Fedora, é que não foi encontrada forma (não quer dizer que não exista) de fazer funcionar o
visualizador de arquivos .Wrl (openvrml-gtkplug). Isso porque é necessário passar um parâmetro
relativo ao GTK-SOCKET-ID do qual não se encontrou muitas informações.
Para poder testar os arquivos .Wrl instalam-se os pacotes do openvrml-0.18.3 disponíveis no
repositório do Fedora 12. Assim pode-se usar a libopenvrml (openvrml-0.16.2) para funcionar no
ARToolkit e o openvrml-0.18.3 para visualizar os .Wrls no navegador e no player. Como nos
repositórios Debian esse pacote ainda não existe, seria necessário compilar o openvrml-0.18.3
diretamente. Isso não será explicado nesse tutorial. Portanto para evitar as dores-de-cabeça dessa
outra compilação recomendo o uso do Fedora 12 como ambiente de trabalho para realidade
aumentada.
Caso algum usuário consiga fazer a instalação em outra distribuição, peço que este notifique,
preferencialmente passando um passo-a-passo (o usuário que o fizer terá seu nome especificado
como autor da seção correspondente) de forma que esta documentação possa ser atualizada,
facilitando assim para quem for trabalhar com realidade aumentada no Linux.
Nota Importante: Observação inicial os comandos cujas linhas começam com # devem ser
executados como root.
1 – Download dos pacotes-fonte: ARToolkit e OpenVRML
1.1 - Baixar o pacote do ARToolkit:

Abrir terminal na pasta onde foram salvos e usar os comandos abaixo.

2.4 – Compilação ARToolkit
$ cd ARToolkit
Após o uso do comando abaixo ele deve retornar um menu, em que se deve escolher as
opções adequadas com seu PC e obter as seguintes mensagens após os “creates”.

2.5 – Teste Simples

Deve-se imprimir, pelo menos o marcador patthiro.pdf, para testes. No item 2.12 existem
instruções de como fazer isso.
Deve-se fornecer uma string de configuração do ARToolkit e depois utilizar o comando
abaixo. Ela difere de acordo com o driver de vídeo escolhido no início do ./Configure. Para mais
informações ler o arquivo index.html na subpasta doc/video.
$ ./simpleTest
Se uma tela com imagem da câmera aparecer, tudo bem, caso contrário pode ser necessário
instalar o pacote libv4l-0 do lenny-backports
2.6 – Instalação libv4l-0 (lenny-backports)
# gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
No final do arquivo deve se adicionar a linha abaixo:

2.7 – Repetição do Teste e outra solução
Tentar novamente executar o ./simpleTest. Caso ainda não funcione (comum em câmeras
que usam V4L2) fazer o seguinte:
$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so ./simpleTest
Se abrir o vídeo, pode-se passar para a instalação do OpenVRML, caso contrário será necessário
buscar outras soluções para o funcionamento de sua webcam com o ARToolkit.
2.8 – Patch OpenVRML
Abrir um terminal e acessar a pasta gerada com a descompactação do pacote do
OpenVRML. Aplicar o patch com:
$ patch -p1 < patch-openvrml-0.16.2
Ele deve retornar:

2.9– Compilação OpenVRML
No Debian não foi possível gerar o plugin do Navegador (dá erros no ./configure), talvez
pelo fato de ele ser um Firefox modificado pela equipe do Debian (Iceweasel), portanto vamos
impedir que ele seja gerado
$ ./configure --disable-mozilla-plugin
Na hora de compilar o openvrml consome muita memória e processamento. O ideal é ter
pelo menos 1GB de RAM e 3 GB de Swap. A compilação pode levar até 2h dependendo do
desempenho de seu computador. Para acelerar a compilação em computadores multi-núcleo pode-se
usar
$ make -j4
Caso tenha somente um núcleo, ou se não souber o tipo de seu processador usar o comando
abaixo:
$ make
# make install
# ln -s /usr/local/lib/libopenvrml.so.6 /usr/lib/libopenvrml.so.6
# ln -s /usr/local/lib/libopenvrm-gl.so.6 /usr/lib/usr/libopenvrml-gl.so.6
2.10 – Patch ARToolkit
Abra com um terminal a pasta extraída do pacote do ARToolkit e aplique o patch:

2.12 – Marcadores e Teste simples de VRML
Abrir o navegador de arquivos na sub-pasta do ARToolkit: patterns.
Abrir os arquivos dos marcadores com um editor de imagens, copiar para o processador de
texto (OpenOffice, por exemplo), organize-os de forma a deixar cada um com uma margem de pelo
menos 0,5cm em volta da borda preta. Imprimir e cortar. Colar em papelão para que ele fique mais
firme.
Para o teste do simpleVRML, dois marcadores funcionam: pattHiro.pdf e pattKanji.pdf.
Deve aparecer um boneco de neve ao ser detectado pela câmera. Cuidado para não obstruir as
bordas pretas do marcador com os dedos.

3.3 – Compilação ARTookit/OpenVRML
A compilação do ARToolkit e do OpenVRML é feita da mesma forma que foi explicada
para o Debian Lenny. Exceto a seção 2.6, já que o Fedora já tem essa lib instalada por padrão (com
outro nome). Uma observação importante é que não adianta querer compilar o plugin do navegador
no Fedora, porque, com o lançamento do Firefox 3.5, algumas bibliotecas de desenvolvimento da
Mozilla mudaram muito e algumas até sumiram e mudaram de nomes, acabando com a
compatibilidade. Dessa forma a opção --disable-mozilla-plugin é obrigatória.
