Quando eu instalo alguma distro, a resolução não vem configurada, eu tento mudar no aplicativo monitores, mas só tem como colocar até 1024 x 768, o normal do monitor é 1280 x 1024, mas suporta até 1440 x 900... já pesquise bastante e vi que tem que mudar manualmente no xorg, só que aqui não tem esse arquivo, entrei na pasta /etc/X11 mas lá também não aparece, tem alguns tutorias na net mas não consigo fazer pq sou meio iniciante no linux, mas no windows ele reconheçe todas as resoluções... estou usando uma distro derivada do ubuntu, Zorin OS Lite, meu pc é antigo e não roda legal essas distros mais pesadas.
Meu monitor é um HP w17e e minha placa de video é uma onboard da intel. Vlw'

Boa noite! Esse tipo de problema geralmente ocorre quando você não tem o driver correto instalado e a placa está rodando com o vesa. As placas da Intel não costumam dar problema, minha sugestão é, primeiro tente instalar o driver, se não funcionar aí sim você altera o xorg.conf.

Para instalar o drive faça (como você disse que a placa é da intel)


$ su
# apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel


Depois você reinicia o X com <ctrl><alt><del>.
Quando reiniciar se a resolução ainda não estiver correta, dê uma olhada se não ha a opção para modificá-la.

Se não funcionar, geramos o xorg.conf e o alteramos.
Depois dá o retorno.

Acontece que as distros Debian-like (isto é, distros derivadas do Debian ou de distros derivadas do Debian, como o Ubuntu) não usam por padrão o xorg.conf, por isso os tutoriais que indicam esse caminho como solução não servem pra você. Por outro lado, é estranho que sua distro não tenha reconhecido os drivers da sua placa Intel. Procure na Central de Atualizações (eu não lembro o nome exato que isso tem na sua distro), e veja se porventura os drivers não estão disponíveis para download por lá.

Ah, e se você aceita uma sugestão, experimente o Debian.

Por curiosidade, o chipset dessa sua placa onboard Intel seria nVidia ou ATI Radeon?

Em nenhum momento na inicialização do seu PC fez-se menção à ativar uma placa de vídeo Intel, e o sistema deve estar indo com o driver VESA padrão. Por favor, diga-me se o comando
