erro do gcc

olá pessoal

tentei compilar um programa e o terminal me retornou a seguinte mensagem:

./configure
loading cache
./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compileer (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables

o que pode ser?

uso Debian Etch i386

Falta instalar o pacote libc6-dev...
