Execute como root, no terminal, o comando:

# alsaconf

Depois d detectada e instalada, execute:

# alsamixer

Para regular o volume e tals. Saia apertando "esc" e depois execute:

# alsactl store

Para iniciar o seu Linux com a placa configurada.

O alsaconf funcionou bem, mas o alsamixer deu o seguinte erro:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

E o alsactl store deu o seguinte erro:
alsactl: save_state:1497: No soundcards found...

Pelo visto tá faltando o módulo específico pra sua placa. O q vc deve fazer é instalar os seguintes pacotes atualizados:

- alsa-base
- alsa-utils
- alsa-modules

Depois faça o msm esquema q eu t falei pra habilitar sua placa.

O pacote alsa-modules não existe no Debian 5.0, e sim seu fonte, o alsa-source. Eu baixei o fonte e recompilei os drivers, mas não adiantou. Continua dando os mesmos erros.

Consegui resolver o problema. A placa de som está instalada. Exceto os módulos mpu401 e sb16, que tiveram conflitos de IRQ e eu não pude resolver porque a IRQ 13, a única disponível, não é aceita pelos dispositivos. Mas eles não são necessários para mim.
