Erro ubuntu 9.04 [RESOLVIDO]

Sou leigo e quando tento atualizar o ubuntu ou instalar um programa dá o seguinte erro:
Não foi possível inicializar as informações do pacote

Um problema impossível de se resolver ocorreu enquanto inicializava as informações do pacote.

Por favor reporte esse erro do pacote 'update-manager' e inclua a seguinte mensagem de erro:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/br.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:As listas de pacotes ou os arquivos de estado não puderam ser analisados ou abertos.'

abre o terminal e digite o seguinte

sudo gedit /etc/apt.conf

ou de um cat /etc/apt.conf

e poste o que está escrito.

na verdade verifique se existe esse arquivo com o locate apt.conf

Olá,

Pode ser que haja erro no dpkg, vou passar abaixo uma serie de procedimento que possa usar, siga o passo-a-passo e no final veremos se dará certo.

1) Entre no arquivo /etc/apt/source.lst e veja se não há nenhum mirror comentado, se houver descomente.
2) Limpar pacotes: apt-get clear
3) Corrigir o dpkg: dpkg --configure -a
4) Forçar instalação: apt-get -f install
5) Atualize a base de dados - apt-get update & apt-get upgrade -y

Não consegui fazer o que me indicou:
1) Entre no arquivo /etc/apt/source.lst e veja se não há nenhum mirror comentado, se houver descomente.

Como faço para entrar neste arquivo?

O que é mirror?

Pode me indicar os comandos, por favor?

sudo gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf

se não tiver nada salve-o

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

troque os repositorios pelo que vou postar:

salve e depois de um sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Fiz como me orientou. O arquivo que falou tá vazio. Salvei e fechei.
Depois abri o sources.list.

vai nos canais de software em sistema --> administração

dai vai em baixar de e coloque servidor principal.

desmarque opção cdrom, veja se carrega ao apertar fechar.

Uhuuu! Deu certo! Valeu Annaaaa!
Aproveitando e já abusando...quando pedi para atualizar fui informado que tem uma versão mais nova...9.10. Devo atualizar ou não? Agora tô com medo pois foi depois de atualizar que comecei a ter problemas.

não atualize as versões por ai. sempre instale do zero.

e só formate se der pt (perda total).
