Essa webcam -> ID 0ac8:307b, foi adicionada no ultimo driver da gspcav 1.0.20, infelismente, não há versão para o driver atual compilado pro ubuntu, sendo necessario vc compilar ele do arquivo fonte:

Ainda com problemas em minha tentativa de instalar o driver gspca para minha web cam com chipset z-star com o id 0ac8:307b, aparentemente o driver foi compilado e instalado corretamente, vejam a saida do dmesg.

Pelo que entendi, existe uma diferença de versão entre o gspca e o devdata entre outros.
Alguma sugestão para resolver isso ?

qual a versão do seu ubuntu?

pelo que parece este erro só aparece quando se usa um kernel antigo, tente baixar o ultimo kernel e compilar em cima dele o driver.

Há algumas formas de se fazer citados no buglist do ubuntu:

Eu uso a versão 8.04 atualizada com o kernel 2.6.24-21 é o ultimo update.

tenta compilar o driver com esta fonte do próprio ubuntu, talvez tenha mais sorte..

estou aqui de volta, como as tentativas anteriores não resolvia o problema do driver, resolvi fazer uma instalação limpa do 8.10 Intrepid Beta. Como resultado obtive exito com o driver gspca para a camera com o id 0ac8:307b, novamente a saida do dmesg. ( kernel 2.6.27-7 ).

Vou no skype e nada acontece, ou melhor, antes não acontecia nada mesmo, agora pelo menos aparece um monte de riscos coloridos xaqualhando na tela de teste do skype. Já é uma evolução. :-)

alguem tem mais alguma sugestão a respeito disso ?

tenta isso:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

options gspca force_rgb=1

esta no link do tutorial que passei antes.

há e veja se o dispositivo tem acesso para oi usuario.

chmod 777 /dev/video0

por ultimo verefica se o driver zc0301 não foi carregado.

lsmod |grep zc0301

se foi retire ele.

sudo modprobe -r zc0301

Segui seus passos, mas acabou ficando na mesma, acrescentei os parametros no arquivo options em /etc/modprobe.d e troquei as permissões de /dev/video0. Verifiquei a existencia do modulo zc0301, não esta carregado.
Ai, em outro tópico, vi um colega reclamando do Camorama e que havia instalado o Cheese, e havia funcionado. Então acrecentei o cheese e de fato a camera funcionou, até tirei umas fotos para testar. No skype esta na mesma com um monte de risco para todos os lados coloridos.
Ai meu filho por aqui comentou " Coloca o AMSN e vê se funciona... Viola !!! configurei e a danada rolou de primeira. Ai reparei o seguinte:
No Amsn o driver aparece corretamente como zc03xx, mas em device aparece como PC Camera V4L2 e o modulo carregado é 0 V4L1, será que isso pode fazer diferença aos outros softwares ? Por hora estou feliz com ela funcionando no Amsn, vou pesquisando aos poucos e acabo resolvendo o restante.
Agradeço as dicas e paciência.

o Camorama, xawtv suportam somente o driver antigo V4Lv1 que a versão 1 do video 4 linux, o cheese e o amsn usam o padrão V4Lv2 que a versão 2 do video for linux, as duas versões do api são incompatives entre si, o que me leva a crer que o suporte a este dispositivo é somente de aplicações para V4Lv2, é o mesmo caso de muitas webcam com o driver UVC, ele também só dá suporte as dispositivos par V4Lv2...

Tai uma consideração interessante, acredito também nisso, o remédio é aguardar as atualizações dos softwares e miauuu.
Nada muito a se fazer no momento. :-)
De qualquer maneira, nada é perdido, no passado estava acostumado a instalar e compilar softwares no Slackware, dificilmente tinha algum problema relacionado a hardware, como aqui no Ubuntu que uso desde a versão 6.06, as tarefas de detecção de hardware sempre foi facilitada, nunca precisei mexer com estas coisas em ambiente Debian Like, dai a dificuldade. Aprendi muito nestes dias com essa webcam... :-)
